Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 A240 Specifications, Review & Price
After the launch of Canvas 4 A210 last month, Micromax has launched another phone named Canvas Doodle 2 A240 with a huge 5.7” HD IPS display and with exactly the same hardware and software specs as the Canvas 4. So, this doodle 2 is basically a gigantic Canvas 4 that comes with a stylus and a bigger display and better battery. There are a lot of improvements have been done from the original Doodle A111, like the display has got HD resolution and specially the RAM has been upgraded to 1GB from 512 MB and the internal storage to 16GB from 4GB. The most notable thing about this new device is its new unibody design. The battery is now non-removable 2600mAh and there is no external microSD card slot as well.
Just like the Canvas 4, Canvas Doodle 2 comes with bunch of added features like smart gestures, pop-up video player & pop-up browser, ‘look away’, blow-to-unlock, ‘flip’ etc. These are basically added 3rd party apps, not embedded with the interface, but still we appreciate these smart features on this smartphone.
Though there is a stylus comes with the phone, we are not very much excited with this as it’s just a replacement of your finger and the tip is still just a rubber ball, so don’t expect anything like the S-pen on Galaxy Note 2. There is no slot on the phone for this stylus, so you are probably not going to carry the stylus around with you. The new magnetic flip case is something you will surely love. The gigantic phone can stand on this which makes the huge 5.7” display a mini TV on your desk.

|DISPLAY||Size||5.7 inches (14.48 cm)||Good upgradation from its predecessors Canvas Doodle A111. The ppi is now decent 258 & the colors look more vivid, thanks to its 16.7M colors support and HD resolution. Though we expected a full HD display, the pixels don’t look pixelated at all. Overall, the display is bright, crisp and enjoyable to look at.|
|Technology||IPS LCD, 16.7M colors|
|Resolution||HD ie. 1280×720 Pixels @258 ppi|
|EXTERIOR||Dimensions||161 x 82.5 x 8.9 mm (6.34 x 3.25 x 0.35 in)||For the first time, Micromax has introduced a uni-body phone with built-in non-removable battery and non-expandable memory just like HTC. The back has nice anodised aluminium look and the build of this Canvas Doodle 2 is also very premium, even feels better than that of Galaxy Note 2. Huge dimensions may not feel comfortable in one hand. It’s pretty heavy also. The magnetic flip case is of very high quality and the phone can stand on the case for watching movies.|
|Ports & Keys||Home, Menu & Option keys (front), Volume rocker (right), Power key (left), 3.5 mm jack (top), microUSB port (bottom), Camera with flash (back)|
|Sensors||Proximity sensor & ambient light sensor|
|PROCESSINGPOWER||Processor||Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7||Though this new Canvas Doodle 2 A240 has better processing power than its predecessor Canvas Doodle A111, the specs fall short of the specs of other players in the market. This spec is exactly same as the Canvas HD A116 & also the new Canvas 4. This is disappointing. There are other phones from Indian brands with better specs e.g. XOLO Play has a 1.5 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU & 12-core NVIDIA ULP GeForce GPU.|
|MEMORY||System Memory||1GB of RAM||Adequate RAM & very good best in class internal storage. Now your phone won’t run out of storage easily. There is no microSD card slot.|
|Internal Storage||16 GB (13GB user available)|
|SOFTWARE||OS||Android v4.2.1 (Jelly Bean)||Latest OS. As usual, Micromax hasn’t done any considerable customisation on the UI theme though there are some cool apps installed.|
|CONNECTIVITY||SIM||Mini-SIM, Dual slot (GSM+GSM)||Very good connectivity options for a phone with this price tag.|
|Operatingfrequencies||GSM - 800, 900, 1800, 1900 MHzHSDPA – 2100 MHz [SIM 1 only]|
|3G||42 MBPS HSDPA, 11 MBPS HSUPA|
|Wi-Fi||Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot|
|GPS||Yes, with A-GPS support|
|Bluetooth||V4.0 with A2DP|
|CAMERA||Primary||12 megapixels||Decent camera resolution with premium features like touch to focus, smile shutter, electronic image stabilization, full HD recording & dual-LED flash. The captures images look a little bit faded, Canvas 4 has a better camera than this one. Check some camera samples: click here|
|Video||Up to 1080p @ 30 fps (Primary),480p @ 19 fps (Secondary)|
|Features||Auto focus, touch focus, panorama(portrait & landscape), HDR, beauty shot, multi-angle photography, smile shutter, geo-tagging, face detection, zero shutter delay, electronic image stabilization|
|BATTERY||Capacity||2600 mAh Li-lon (non-removable)||Decent battery for the huge device, though the battery backup isn’t great. You will get around 1 full day with normal to heavy uses, less than 1 day with wireless on.|
|Talk Time||Up to 8 h (2G)|
|Standby Time||Up to 220 h (2G)|
||There are lots of added features on this phone which are making this device look much smarte.. Micromax is following Samsung step-by-step and we really appreciate this initiative.|
|SAR INFO||0.25 W/Kg @ 1 gm (head)0.43 W/Kg @ 1 gm (body)||Far below the limit.|
|PRICE||19,000 INR ~320 USD||Aggressive pricing for the features & specs. Value for money rating 3.5/5|
Strong points: The most attractive thing on this phone is its look & feel. The uni-body design, aluminium finish, nice magnetic flip-cover and premium quality accessories make this phone feel like a premium phone like HTC one or Galaxy S4. You can show-off the amazing software features & added apps to your friends and the huge display will also attract a lot of people’s attention.
Weak point: This huge phone isn’t easy to handle with one hand and also it’s bulky. The CPU & GPU are below par considering the price. The interface isn’t custom Micromax and sometimes you may face software glitches. The camera is also not that good. Micromax should have priced this device below 15,000 Rs.
Suitable for those people looking for a huge display phone, the large 5.7” colourful display will be great for gaming, watching movies, browsing the internet, reading e-books etc.
Other choices: You can also try Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 or Galaxy Grand duos with better software features but lower display quality and hardware specs. LG Optimus L9 is another phone with great looks, features & price. Sony Xperia L is a full-fledged smartphone with premium features like NFC etc.
